0.13 Survival Mode Introduction


Gamemode: Survival

Survival is Outlands' new wave-based survival game mode. The purpose of this mode is two-fold, one as an alternative way to play aside from the upcoming campaign mode, but also as a test-bed for combat enhancements and features. As important as the campaign is going to be to the game, it's more-so important that the second-to-second combat works well and feels good.

New: Starbase

A very early model of the starbase could be seen upon completing the initial tutorial, but with the new 0.13 version, a much improved mesh has been introduced. This starbase includes two new features listed below.

Repairs
After your starship has been damaged, it's now possible to repair that damage by interacting with the starbase. Repairs will continue until all damage is repaired or your currency has run out.

Starship Purchasing
An additional use for your currency is the purchasing of new starships. It is now possible to purchase a second Gallant Hunter starship once you have accumulated 3,000 currency. With this feature now in place, it's going to be much easier to add additional purchasable starships in future updates.


Map: Tarlos

Close to it's star, Gallus, Tarlos is a messy and chaotic system used by Gallant clans for mining large amounts of resources. The map is currently set-up for the Survival gamemode. Feedback from this map will be referred to when building new maps for this mode, and taken into account for campaign versions of these maps.

Featuring a starbase at it's centre, with three separate lanes, survive ten waves against ever-increasingly difficult Alseer attacks.

Adjustment: Gallant Hunter Weapons

During the tutorial, it was noticed that the Gallant Hunter starships were incredibly strong when compared to the current selection of Alseer starships. Working on the new build, the starship's strength has been reduced by reducing the number of weapons attached to the different subsystems. With less turrets, this has also made an improvement to the overall performance of the game.

Adjustment: Wreck Animations

Starships will now animate to communicate that all of their systems have been disabled with their movement and additional damage SFX. This has been a great step in the direction of more accurately communicating the damage states of starships. This will be continuously looked at through development.


Adjustment: Starship Collisions

Collisions between different starships are now functioning. Having your starship ram into another starship, whether it be an Alseer one or your own, will cause damage to both. The strongest of the starships will be the one to survive the encounter. Additional adjustments are planned to improve performance of collisions, but this is a great first step!
